Removing crayon from a carpet yourself is possible. You have 3 choices: dish soap, iron and blot, or carpet cleaning solution. If you don’t want to bother doing it yourself, we present the other obvious option.

get crayon out of carpet How to Get Crayon Out of Carpet

This is an actual crayon and other-stained carpet someone inherited when they bought a home. The owner posted it in Reddit along with the question, “how do you remove crayon from a carpet?”

Almost all the answers said to replace it. Others gave some spot-removing tips. Both are wrong, not because you can’t remove crayon, but the chance of someone spending the amount of time to get all those spots out themselves is not only slim, but unreasonable unless their time has no worth to them.

The best answer is, for a carpet like that, call a professional carpet cleaner. (If you’re on Long Island, call  Clean ‘n’ Fresh.) If you find an ethical one, he or she will tell you if it’s possible before they even start and there would be no fee in most cases (at least that would be true of me). But, since most of the people coming to this article probably just want to know how to get a crayon spot or two out of your carpet without much hassle, let’s address that.

Yes, you can probably get it out yourself. Here are some methods.

Method 1: Applying liquid dish soap

Step 1: If you have any excess crayon on your carpet, use a butter knife to scrape it away. Use an ice cube wrapped in a plastic bag to make the crayon hard. Then it would be easier for you to scrape it off from your carpet.

Step 2: With the help of a vacuum cleaner, remove the scraped crayon from the carpet.

Step 3: Mix some water with liquid dish soap. Take 1 cup of water and 1/4th teaspoon of liquid soap. Using a spoon, mix the ingredients effectively until they have dissolved.

Step 4: Apply the above solution on a small area for testing it. Then with the help of a clean, wet cloth, sponge the site. Ensure that no discolorations are occurring to your carpet. If you see any discoloration, then do not apply this method.

Step 5: If the solution is safe to use, apply it on the whole affected area until it is covered. Make sure that the solution stays for five minutes at least. You will soon see that the crayon stain is removed.

Note: Make sure that you do not scrub or wipe the stain. This will push the color deep inside the carpet, making it even harder for you to remove it. It will also damage your carpet fibres.

Step 6: Once you are successful in removing the crayon stain, with a clean wet cloth, blot the area. Make sure that all of the solutions are removed from the carpet.

Note: After blotting is done, you can vacuum the area to make your carpet look like new.

Method 2: Using an iron

Step 1: On a small portion of your carpet, test the iron first, since many carpet fibres melt at high temperatures. If your carpet fibres burn, become disfigured or any issue while using a hot iron, do not apply this method.

Step 2: Initially, cover the area where the crayon has been smeared with a white cloth. Once you have heated your iron, apply the iron’s tip over the piece of cloth and press it where the stain is.

Note: If you have an issue with melted crayon, then use soapy water on the clean cloth and let it soak thoroughly into the stain before applying the iron over it. Make sure that you blot it afterwards. This is the procedure on how to get melted crayon out of the carpet.

Step 3: If the crayon still doesn’t get removed, with the help of a clean cloth soaked in water and detergent, sponge the affected area. After you are done blotting, clean the area with cold water and dry it.

Method 3: Use a carpet cleaning solution

Step 1: With the help of a dull knife, scrape the leftover crayon from the carpet since you need to prepare the carpet for applying the cleaner on it. If there are any crayon pieces on the carpet, use a vacuum cleaner to pick up the leftover residue before you apply the cleaner.

Step 2: Purchase a good quality carpet cleaner from your local hardware store. If you are purchasing a solvent-based carpet cleaner, make sure that it is suitable for your specific carpet fibers.

Note: Make sure that you go through the instructions properly before applying the carpet cleaner.

Step 3: Use the carpet cleaner on the spot, as mentioned in the bottle. Let it sit for a while and blot the area with a dry cloth until the crayon is wholly removed.

Note: You might need to rinse the area with clean water and let it dry after you have applied the cleaner.
