Of course, everyone is looking for the best price for their floor or upholstery cleaning, but many don’t realize they may not be comparing apples to apples when they shop around. There are often hidden or missing costs in price quotes, and if the price you’re quoted seems too good to be true, it just may be.

Beware the bait & switch
It is not uncommon for carpet cleaning companies to use what’s called “bait and switch” pricing, meaning they offer you a very low price in the expectation they’ll be able to sell you on additional necessary services when they get there, just like this. The following review is for a company doing business here in Long Island:

But at the quoted price of $29 a room, you would have thought their final price for 8 areas would have been only $240 – not $500!
So what happened? Why the price jump? It can be a number of things, but typically what’s not included in cheap quotes are the things you need to actually get the carpet clean such as a spot treatment and deep scrubbing. Because those are so necessary, they are easy to upsell.
Others will also add on fees for travel expense, and still others will even charge more for soap! Because they are already at your home ready to work, it’s actually easy for them to convince or pressure you to pay, not just for those add-ons, but to even pay much more than normal.
And all the while, you thought you had found a great deal.
What happens if you don’t agree to the upsell? Don’t you then get a great deal?
Aside from the problem that maybe your original quote does not include soap, or spot cleaning, some companies offer their technician a sales commission. If they’re not able to upsell you, they may be in a hurry to get to the next job to make more money. I know because I used to work for one of those companies. It’s a brand name you’re probably familiar with. And this is exactly why I decided to start Clean ‘n’ Fresh to give consumers something better.
This same problem happens with small independent companies as well. If your technician isn’t really charging a fair and reasonable fee for the time to do the job right, and you don’t agree to their upsells, they have no other option than to get in and get out quickly – otherwise, it’s costing them money, and they literally could go out of business if they don’t make the upsell.
